In my Cuban household, flavor came from aromatics and balance rather than heat. After moving to Maine, I repeatedly encountered a misconception that Spanish-speaking cultures are defined by hot peppers and “spicy” food. Sabor uses the visual language of Spanish 1960s advertising—saturated color, theatrical styling, and playful copy—to question that stereotype. The staged portrait and abundant table are designed to feel seductive and familiar, then redirect the viewer toward a different meaning of spice: tradition, aroma, and layered flavor. Created for AIGA Maine’s 2024 Poster Show, Feast Your Eyes (Portland Media Center, October 2024).
